Deer Hunting: |
Northern Missouri is well known for producing it's share
of Midwest giants each year, with the Kirksville area and Adair County
being local hotspots within the region.
Deer Hunts/Archery:
Archery season begins September 15. We run two hunts in September, one
from the 15th - 19th and one the 20th – 24th. These hunts are for the
hunter looking for a easier effort hunt. This time of year bucks are
in bachelor groups and feeding consistently in soybean fields and
alfalfa. Mornings are spent hunting the acorns and edges of bedding
areas. Evenings are spent watching fields and funnels leading to them.
After the September hunts we shut down until late October, this takes the
pressure off the deer and allows time for advanced scouting. The late
October and early November hunts are focused on specific bucks and early
rut activity. Because of increased rubbing and scraping the bucks are more
active and funnels are targeted. Whenever possible you
will hunt the best sign and funnels available to pinpoint buck travel.
Wind direction and stand access routes are the first concern when choosing
your stand location. If the animals are pressured they will eventually
become nocturnal.
Firearm Hunts:
Missouri firearm season opens mid-November each year letting you capitalize
on the chasing phase of the rut. Hunting is done from tripods, ladder stands
and blinds. These are high success hunts during this time of year with the
biggest bucks being active. Shots can range from out to 350+ yards, so your
shooting ability affects your stand selection.
This is the last hunt of the year so from Thanksgiving until the next
September the deer are left to travel the woods safely.
